I am back home from my trip to China. Walked through the door of my place the night before last, April 18th at 10 PM Eastern time. I was too wired to go to sleep and needed to eat and shower. I did not sleep a wink on the plane, so I was awake for over 33 hours. My deepest gratitude and thanks to dear friend, Lana Lee for looking after Mom while I was away. The trip would not have been possible without her kind help. Mom and Lana get along wonderfully, so I had no worries on the home front.
In order to make getting to the airport easier on Saturday I decided to stay in Beijing the night before my departure. Miss Echo is credited with helping me with planning this trip as well as assisting with travel logistics, arranging transport and any changes in accommodations throughout this sojourn. Thank you, Echo! One of the little gems she researched prior to my visit was a form of traditional family style living quarters in the ancient Hutong of Beijing. It was somewhat similar to staying in a B&B in the U.S. or Europe. The accommodations formed a perimeter around a quaint little courtyard where breakfast was served. On Friday afternoon, I traveled by high-speed train from Jinan to the capital city. Checked in and then went to wander the area to find a spot for dinner. There were many food options along one of the major thoroughfares. I had a quick bite to eat and then walked back to the hotel.
I took time to reflect upon the experiences of this first venture into the Middle Kingdom. From my first meal at DaDong to those subway rides during rush hour in both big cities – Beijing and Shanghai, to hiking on the Great Wall and exploring the Forbidden City,
to the Terracotta Warriors in Xi’an,
Special thanks to all of the students with whom I was able to meet and share food or tours of their respective cities. I am delighted to have made such wonderful friends. China has been a great experience from start to finish.
Over the next few days I will edit the more than 1,000 pictures I took and then I will post articles about each city I visited and the attractions and activities in which I engaged..
Future destinations in China; In the South – Guangzhou, and Hong Kong, Guilin, — West – Szechuan, Tibet. as well as Suzhou and Hainan Island.
