Summertime

The great American composer,George Gershwin, was well known for some classics in the American repertoire of music. Songs like; Someone to Watch Over Me, Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off, Rhapsody in Blue and many more. Gershwin wrote Porgy and Bess an American opera that debuted on Broadway in 1935 – a folk opera based on the novel Porgy written by Dubose Heyward.

Summertime

lyrics by Dubose Heyward
music by George Gershwin

Summertime,
And the livin’ is easy
Fish are jumpin’
And the cotton is high

Your daddy’s rich
And your mamma’s good lookin’
So hush little baby
Don’t you cry

One of these mornings
You’re going to rise up singing
Then you’ll spread your wings
And you’ll fly to the sky

But till that morning
There’s a’nothing can harm you
With daddy and mamma standing by

Summertime,
And the livin’ is easy
Fish are jumpin’
And the cotton is high

Your daddy’s rich
And your mamma’s good lookin’
So hush little baby
Don’t you cry

Doc Watson arranged and performed my favorite version of one of the most popular songs from Porgy and Bess, titled, Summertime. If you click on that previous link you may listen to a particularly fine version recorded at the Bottom Line in NYC, August of 1977. The tune features his son, Merle who predeceased his father. Merle died in a tragic farming accident in 1985.
