Winter scenes

Winter in the Northeast part of the U.S. is a time that offers little color, but there are some scenes of beauty if you dare to venture out into the ice and snow. Here are some pictures to demonstrate that point.

The way a crow

Shook down on me

The dust of snow

From a hemlock tree

Has given my heart

A change of mood

And saved some part

Of a day I had rued.

These winter scenes exhibit a stark form of beauty that many people do not appreciate. I will admit that as the month of February comes to an end, I am eager to bid winter good-bye. I enjoy the bitterly crisp air as it slaps my face in the morning, but I yearn to bury my hands into the soil and begin sowing seeds for the spring. Conversely, I will bemoan the hot and humid dog days of summer and beg that nature return the cold and snow. In that way I suppose that I am rather fickle….never content with what is and always longing for something else.

Soon, the Canadian geese will be heard honking as they return to the lakes. The songbirds will follow them and fill the air with their sweet chirping and the mourning doves will wake me with their doleful call. It is knowing that the change will come in the weeks ahead that brightens my spirits.
